Ballasts & Drivers
Ballasts and drivers stabilize a light’s output. You’ll commonly find them in buildings that have fluorescent, HID, or linear LED plug-and-play lights. Essentially, ballasts and LED ballasts act as the heart of a lighting fixture. The devices control energy output and ensure the light is distributed evenly.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of ballasts is that they adjust to the conditions of a building. For example, the heart pumps blood differently when someone is sleeping as opposed to exercising—this is a perfect analogy for ballasts and drivers. Some ballasts act as dimmers, meaning they can change energy output by illuminating and darkening a light source.
