Breckenridge has recently updated its exterior lighting regulations as part of its initiative to become a certified International Dark Sky Community. The town aims to reduce light pollution to protect human health, wildlife, and the natural environment.

All properties are required to comply with the new Exterior Lighting Code by July 1, 2025. Key requirements include:

• Fixture Design: Outdoor lighting must be fully shielded, downcast, and have solid sides to prevent light from spilling upwards or sideways.
• Color Temperature: Light bulbs should not exceed 3,000 Kelvin in both commercial and residential areas.
• Decorative Lighting: Permitted from November 1 to April 1. In Lighting Zone 1 (commercial areas), there's a curfew of 2 a.m., while other zones have an 11 p.m. curfew. Colored LED lighting is now allowed, with a maximum bulb size of 3 inches. Decorative lighting is limited to two features, such as building roof eave lines or window trims. Blinking or rotating lights are prohibited.
• Fixture Height: Maximum lighting fixture height is 15 feet for residential properties and 18 feet for commercial properties.
